Due to the pandemic, an “ad hoc” group formed by eight Club representatives met on 9 October 2020 with the aim to identify one or more suitable road safety project(s) to partially repurpose their FIA RI 2020 membership fee.
They unanimously agreed that FIA Region I should further develop the concept of the pedestrian visibility campaign “#ISEEYOU”, implemented twice by AA South Africa. The ambition was to expand this to more African countries to ensure vulnerable road users visibility and turn it into a more sustainable large scale project.
The importance of this project lies in the figures shared by WHO. Globally, approximately 1.3 million people lose their life in road traffic crashes each year, and 90% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (WHO, 2021). The African continent has the highest rate of road traffic death (26.6/100 000 people) and pedestrians account for 40% of all its road traffic deaths (WHO, 2018) – the highest share of pedestrian fatalities in the world. The cause is very often a lack of infrastructure for pedestrians (no sidewalks, no zebra crossing thus forcing pedestrians to “jay walk”, no street lighting).
