On 27 May, the European Commission unveiled its proposal to help the EU economy recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

FIA Region I welcomes the inclusion of mobility in the recovery package as it shows that the Commission recognises the key role that mobility plays in restarting our society. The recovery package foresees different measures related to clean mobility: the Connecting Europe Facility, InvestEU and other funds will support the financing of the installation of one million charging points, clean fleet renewals by cities and companies, sustainable transport infrastructure and enable the shift to clean urban mobility.

According to FIA Region I, it is paramount that the plan proposed today puts consumers at its centre, ensuring that the money invested benefits our society at large, without leaving anyone behind.

FIA Region I Director General, Laurianne Krid, commented: “These incentives must be both coherent with existing EU legislation, and future-proof. Especially in these challenging times, we must ensure that the new measures will not penalise consumers – including motorists – further.”

Specifically on the topic of shifting to clean urban mobility, FIA Region I insists on the importance of providing the consumers with clear and accurate information about the vehicles’ environmental footprint; in this sense, life-cycle assessment is the best way to ensure a technology-neutral approach to decarbonisation, allowing for clean mobility measures to translate efficiently into a cleaner world.

Laurianne Krid concluded: “The COVID-19 crisis gives us the opportunity to rethink and reshape mobility, especially in urban areas. If we want to ensure that all citizens have access to safe, affordable, clean, and efficient mobility, all modes must be part of the solution”.
