The European Commission presented its European Green Deal today, announcing a series of initiatives to lower emissions in all sectors.

In the transport sector, initiatives proposed include the adoption of a strategy for sustainable and smart mobility in 2020, improving the transport system to allow for new sustainable mobility services, revision of the Energy taxation directive and boosting the uptake of alternatively fuelled vehicles. New standards for pollutant and CO2 emissions from cars should be set in the coming years and the possible inclusion of road transport – amongst other sectors – in the ETS is also mentioned. The Commission does not rule out the possibility to withdraw its current proposed revision of the Eurovignette directive, whilst calling on the Parliament and the Council to keep a high level of ambition.

Laurianne Krid Director General at FIA Region I commented: “The new Commission is sending citizens a strong signal by acknowledging that achieving sustainable transport means putting users first and providing them with more affordable, accessible, healthier and cleaner alternatives to their current mobility habits. As a starting point, we will need a comprehensive approach to reduce the environmental impact of all modes of transport. We look forward to bringing input to the discussions, to make sure that we deliver a truly more efficient transport system, which is the backbone of the European economy. ‘

FIA Region I has set clean mobility as one of the six areas EU decision-makers should focus on in its  Manifesto for Mobility published ahead of the European elections.
