Consumers need the facts when it comes to vehicle emissions

    18 June 2015

On 18 June, FIA Region I spoke at a high level conference Driving Road Decarbonisation Forwards. Speaking on competitiveness and consumers in decarbonisation, FIA Region I Director General Jacob Bangsgaard said:

“Competitiveness means providing the best products for consumers. It also means providing clear and correct data on what emissions users can expect from their vehicle. To better inform consumers, it is clear that there must be a change in the vehicle emissions test cycle. Currently, the gap between the real life emissions and the type approval value from the test cycle has increased from about 8% in 2011 to 21% in 2013. The EU needs swift implementation of the new test cycle (WLTP). The WLPT is a more representative cycle and will give more realistic results; it should also progressively include the consumption of vehicle accessories, such as air conditioning, into the criteria tested.

What consumers need most is the right information about what car and engine is best suited to their needs. This can happen through the introduction of a truly representative emissions and energy efficiency label for passengers cars. With clear labelling, consumers can make better choices.

Further, unlocking the full potential of connectivity, intelligent transport systems and the sharing economy will strengthen the market for new services and improve the efficiency of existing infrastructure.”

Other speakers at the conference included European Commissioners Maroš Šefčovič, Arias Cañete, Elżbieta Bieńkowska and Violeta Bulc, responsible respectively for Energy Union, Climate and Energy, Internal market and Industry, and Transport. As well as MEPs Giovanni La Via, Chair of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, Michael Cramer, Chair of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and Jerzy Buzek, Chair of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.
