Euro NCAP has awarded a five-star safety rating to BYD’s new electric long-haul truck, the ETT 44, marking the Chinese manufacturer’s entry into Europe’s long-haul sector. The results were released alongside IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover.

As the first long-haul electric truck tested by Euro NCAP, the ETT 44 achieved 89% in Safe Driving and 73% in Crash Avoidance, earning both a five-star rating and a CitySafe award — showing that the shift from diesel to electric doesn’t have to come at the expense of safety. Mercedes-Benz and Scania also expanded their five-star, CitySafe-rated line-ups: the updated Actros F scored 79% in Safe Driving and 82% in Crash Avoidance, while the Scania G- and R-series posted particularly strong Crash Avoidance scores of 96%.

Not all models fared as well. The IVECO S-WAY, tested in the regional distribution category, received just two stars, with limited direct vision and a lack of active safety technologies for pedestrians and cyclists in urban environments weighing on its score.

Euro NCAP is urging fleet operators to look closely at standard specifications, noting that much of the equipment enabling five-star and CitySafe ratings on some models remains optional rather than standard fitment.
