EuroTest has just launched the results of a safety survey of 18 passenger ferries connecting 36 European and North African cities. The majority of the ferries met the requirements, but very few sufficiently inform passengers about safety.

The German governments new road tax, a toll to fund road infrastructure, provides compensation to Germans, exempting German nationals from the obligation to pay. If implemented, this means that foreigners will be financing the expansion and maintenance of German roads.

Euro NCAP released the results for four heavy quadricycles tested in a special safety campaign. All models performed very poorly and some have shown serious risks of life threatening injuries. Based on these results, it is clear that stricter safety regulations must be considered for these types of vehicles.

On 6 December 2013, the Annual General Assembly of the Fédération Internationale de lAutomobile (FIA) approved a resolution on access to car data and vehicle telematics platforms. The resolution outlines the developments that are emerging in car telematics and highlights that consumer protection has been largely absent until now.

EuroTest has just launched the results of a survey of 60 parking garages in 15 major European cities. The facilities were rated on a series of criteria to be very good, good, acceptable, poor or very poor. However, not a single parking garage was rated very good. Only ten test candidates rated good, 39 achieved a meagre acceptable rating, nine were considered poor by the testers and two were categorised as very poor. Ten parking garages failed the test.

On 5 November, the implementation timeline and telematics possibilities for eCall were discussed in several EU Parliamentary Committees. The FIA strongly urges policymakers to keep to the 2015 implementation deadline and to not allow this life-saving legislation to be derailed by peripheral and inconsequential arguments. It has been shown that vehicle technical requirements and Member State public service access points are on track to meet the 2015 deadline.

On 7 November 2013, eight major road safety violations will be punishable when driving in a foreign country as the EU Directive (2011/82/EU) on the cross-border exchange of information on traffic offences comes into effect. National traffic laws will apply to all drivers, regardless of the country where their vehicle is registered.

Thierry Willemarck has been elected the new FIA Region I President today (15 May 2013). Mr Willemarck is a Belgian national who is also CEO of Touring Club Belgium (TCB). He replaces the out-going President Werner Kraus after serving 8 years in the role.

This years European Road Safety Day is on 6 May, the first day of the UN Global Road Safety Week. To mark the occasion, the CLEPA, eSafetyAware, and the FIA invite the road safety community and the general public to join a walk led by EC Vice President Kallas for pedestrian safety (beginning at Schuman Roundabout at 16:00) and to experience demonstrations of advanced life-saving vehicle technologies at Autoworld (14:00-20:00).

Consumers will lose out if the test cycle for passenger car emissions is not revised to take account of real world conditions, and if supercredits are used to water-down current targets, the FIA has said in a letter to European Parliament ENVI MEPs ahead of a key committee vote tomorrow. A new EU tyre labelling regulation comes into force as of 01 November 2012. The new rules aim to provide end-users of vehicles with relevant information about the quality of the estimated 115 million tyres sold in the EU every year, and to guide them towards choosing a product which is more fuel efficient, has better braking in wet conditions and is less noisy.

The 13th EuroTAP tunnel test has just been carried out by five FIA Clubs: ADAC in Germany, ACI in Italy, ANWB in the Netherlands, ÖAMTC in Austria, and TCS in Switzerland. The results highlight the good progress made by certain tunnels, in particular the Wattkopf Tunnel in Germany and the Tauern tunnel in Austria.

The mandatory EU-wide introduction of the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) for all new type-approved motorbikes over 125cc from 2016 (rather than the originally proposed date of 2017), was a key provision agreed between the European Parliament and Council of Ministers on Friday 28 September.
