As part of the highly-anticipated Mobility Package, the European Commission hopes to prescribe new ways to collect road taxes for Member States. The proposal announced today, notably, foresees a phasing out of vignette systems for passenger cars by 2027, a measure that has already been criticised by some of the eight Member States concerned. While the climate challenge should be addressed by the EU, FIA Region I is concerned that the text would simply increase the burden on private motorists, without significant improvements on environment side.

On 30 November, the European Commission issued a Communication on its strategy for Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). FIA Region I welcomes the Commissions acknowledgement that C-ITS deployment needs consumer understanding and support. It further recognises the importance of data protection and that private citizens should control how their data is used.

On 29 November, the European Parliaments Environmental Protection (ENVI) Committee voted on the revision of the vehicle type approval Regulation. Among the amendments, FIA Region I and its Mobility Clubs particularly welcome the proposed creation of a European agency dedicated to the monitoring of type-approval and market surveillance activities.

EU Governments generated a surplus of 107.9 billion on road transport taxes in 2013. Road transport generated 286.3 billion in national taxes and charges, governments only re-invested a 178.4 billion into the road network.

FIA mobility Clubs released today the results of emissions testing of two vehicle models affected by defeat devices: the Audi Avant 2.0 TDI and VW Golf 2.0 TDI BMT. The test results show that these two vehicle models are likely not to be adversely affected by the current recall.

FIA Region I has revealed exactly what data new vehicles are able to track and transmit. In addition to the creation of driver profiles, vehicle location, trip length, personal information synced from mobile phones can be tracked and transmitted back to the manufacturer.
