Club news: NAF helps motorists win the “battle against time” wasted in traffic jams

On 22 September, the Norges Automobil-Forbund (NAF) campaign “Kampen om tiden” (“battle against time”) culminated in an ambitious experiment: to remove 600 cars and, at the same time, end the traffic jams around Oslo.

On the day, NAF and its partners promoted multiple alternatives, such as park-and-ride, public transportation and cycling. IKEA partnered the campaign and made its parking lot available to motorists where they could take free buses into the city.

Although the campaign did not entirely remove all of the queues on the E18 around Oslo, travel times on especially busy stretches of highway was reduced by 30% during rush hour. NAF also succeeded to promote solutions to traffic jams by convincing motorists to find alternative methods for their commute and to encouraging workers to make use of flexible working hours or home office solutions. NAF also used this opportunity to publish the findings from this year’s road user survey.
