Meeting with Commissioner Tajani to discuss eCall and road safety

ACI President Sticchi Damiani and FIA Region I President Werner Kraus held a meeting with Antonio Tajani, the EC Vice-President for Industry and Entrepreneurship, on 7 May 2013 to discuss an upcoming EC proposal expected on the emergency call system eCall.

The Commission has estimated that eCall will save up to 2,500 lives in Europe every year, and reduce the severity of injuries and trauma in tens of thousands of cases. The legislation is expected to include a deadline of 2015 for the implementation of the technology in all new car types, after a delay which goes back to 2009.

Commissioner Tajani thanked the FIA and its member Clubs for their active contribution to the eCall debate. He underlined that while the Commission supported the principle of consumers' freedom of choice and an open platform for the eCall system, much would depend also on negotiations in the Council and Parliament. A Commission proposal is expected to be published on 22 May 2013.

Also under discussion at the meeting with Commissioner Tajani were initiatives underway by FIA Clubs to promote road safety in the context of the UN Global Road Safety Week. The week kicked off in Brussels with a Long Short Walk for Pedestrian Safety on Monday 6 May (also European Road Safety Day) which was coordinated by the FIA, and supported by the Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas.
