LAMB, Latvia wins the 2016 European Traffic Education Contest

Publication date: 23 September 2016

The European Traffic Education Contest took place from 22-25 September 2016 and was hosted by the Czech Automobile Club, UAMK. LAMB, Latvia came in first place, with RAS, Russia in second and UAMK, Czech Republic in third place. AL, Finland won the FIA Region I helmet challenge by decorating the most creative bike helmet. In addition to the contest challenges, FIA Region I launched the campaign Stay Bright and the children received advice on how best to stay visible in the winter months as cyclists and pedestrians.

Thierry Willemarck, FIA Region I President, said: “Every year, children that participate in this contest leave with the necessary skills to participate safely in traffic when they return home. We also reminded them with our Stay Bright campaign of the importance of wearing reflective gear in the winter months so that they remain visible to drivers. It is essential that children understand and respect the rules of the road. The continued support of the European Commission for this event shows the importance of teaching the next generation how to be safe on the road.”

Nearly 100 children from 22 countries joined the contest after having succeeded in regional and national traffic education competitions. In 2016, the contest included three bicycle obstacle courses, a traffic labyrinth, a photo booth challenge and a helmet customisation challenge. Each team is made up of two girls and two boys aged between 10 to 12 years.
