Film festival highlights the need for greater road safety awareness

Publication date: 15 September 2015

Leading in to European Mobility Week, FIA Region I took part in the first European road safety film festival, where 64 films from 28 countries were screened. In addition to the FIA Region I entry “Think Bikes” featuring Eddy Merckx, produced by the Belgian Touring Club TCB, Automobile Clubs from Portugal (ACP), Italy (ACI) and Swizerland(TCS) took part.

Jacob Bangsgaard, FIA Region I Director General said: “We must always strive to achieve greater road safety and this begins with the awareness of citizens. I’m very pleased that, not only FIA Region I, but our Clubs as well, have participated today, showing the very excellent work being done by Automobile Clubs in support of road safety. To further improve road safety in Europe, we urge the European Union to set an ambitious reduction target for serious road traffic injuries and implement second phase driver training.”

The film Walk Safe by ACI achieved second place in the Education category, and the film Traffic Education Contest by TCS won third place in the category of Education.

High level participants in the event included MEP Dominique Riquet and Luciana Iorio, President of the UNECE Forum for Road Safety.

The event’s objective was to promote best productions and compare movies and video communication tools for road safety. It also aimed to bring together stakeholders in road safety, such as the United Nations, the European Union, governments, public authorities, business leaders, associations, media, youth networks and anyone interested in road safety.
