FIA Region I contributes to the ITS Congress in Helsinki

Publication date: 18 June 2014

From 16 to 19 June 2014, the 10th ITS European Congress was held in Helsinki with the theme “ITS in your pocket – proven solutions driving user services”. The ITS Congress is one of Europe’s largest events in Intelligent Transport Systems and Services. The major topics of this year’s Congress were sustainability, multimodality, innovation and a focus on consumers.

During the “Showcasing benefits of ITS” session, FIA Region I spoke about coordinating the iMobility Challenge, a project that holds public demonstration events of intelligent mobility systems. Since the iMobility Challenge is showcasing new innovative mobility technologies to end-users and decision-makers, the session represented an opportunity to invite industry stakeholders to participate in such events. At the session “Opening the market to C-ITS through the deployment in cities” the FIA argued that, despite the rising development of cooperative ITS services, an important challenge is to improve their uptake by consumers. Barriers to mass deployment may be related to several factors: a general lack of knowledge about functions and benefits, a lack of market transparency and interoperability, privacy and safety concerns.

The FIA underlined the importance of ITS to enhance sustainable mobility in cities, in particular insisting on the importance of interoperability to sustain competition and consumer choice. This will help ensure that consumers reap the full benefits of the cooperative ITS systems they pay for and maintain the ability to freely choose service providers. The FIA concluded that the success of ITS applications depends highly on the ability to address data protection and privacy-related issues.

During the ITS Congress, the iMobility Challenge also held a demonstration event. Read more about the event.
