eCall moves one step closer to saving 2,500 lives annually in the EU

On 2 March, the European Competitiveness Council adopted the eCall type-approval legislation, mandating emergency call technology as a standard feature in all new vehicles from 2018. FIA Region I welcomes the vote, while also regretting that users will have to wait another three years to benefit from this technology.

eCall will undoubtedly accelerate the deployment of connected car technologies. Within eCall, the European Commission is mandated to explore the need for legislation on a secure, standardised open telematics platform, which would allow independent operators to provide additional services based on vehicle data. An open platform would boost application deployment and provide consumers with real choice for applications and services. FIA Region I urges the Commission to allow free consumer choice for future connected car services by granting independent operators access to the in-vehicle telematics box.

Thierry Willemarck, President of FIA Region I, said: “Although today we see eCall moving in the right direction, it is hard to forget the long wait and lives lost as the negotiations dragged on. More lives will be lost unnecessarily until we reach the 2018 implementation deadline. Once the legislation is approved, the FIA urges the European Commission to grant independent operators access to vehicle telematics; this would allow free consumer choice for connected car services in the future.”

The FIA’s consumer principles for consumer protection with connected cars:

  • Data Protection: consumers should own all data generated by their vehicle, get clear information about the data gathered and its potential use and be free to share it with service providers of their choice

  • Consumers’ free choice: consumers should have the right to choose from a variety of safe product functionalities and services

  • Fair Competition: to ensure consumers free choice a fair aftersales market is needed to allow innovation and a variety of service offers

 

What is eCall?
eCall, an electronic safety system that automatically calls emergency services in the case of a serious car accident, is ready to be deployed across Europe. Even if you are unconscious, the system will inform rescue workers of the crash site's exact location, and the ambulance will be on its way within minutes. The European Commission estimates that eCall will save up to 2,500 lives in Europe every year, and reduce the severity of injuries and trauma in tens of thousands of cases.
