Commission launches GEAR 2030 to address new challenges in the mobility sector

On 26 January, the GEAR 2030 High Level Group held their first official meeting to begin to address challenges stemming from technological developments and a new approach to mobility. Over a two year period, the GEAR 2030 High Level Group will focus on three areas of work:
The adaptation of the value chain to new global challenges
Automated and connected vehicles
Trade, international harmonisation and global competitiveness
Elżbieta Bieńkowska, Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs said: "This is an important project for the Commission. The automotive industry is important for growth and jobs. We need to analyse the challenges affecting competitiveness. I expect this group to develop a forward-looking agenda to fuel innovation, adapt to new trends and reinforce access to growth-driven markets. With this process I am also turning a new page in cooperation with the industry. I trust we can build a positive agenda."
During the meeting Violeta Bulc, Commissioner for Transport spoke on how Mobility as a Service will bring jobs and growth to the mobility sector and the Commission must be able to tackle and promote disruptions. She supported the need to look at the sharing of data, who has access to it and how is it used.
Jacob Bangsgaard, Director General of FIA Region I, said: “It will not be business as usual in the coming 15 years for mobility services so we need to rethink the way we regulate and legislate. Data sharing will be key in this new market place. We must secure a level playing field for the suppliers of services. Consumers must have free choice to decide with whom, under which conditions and for which service they want to share their personal data.”
FIA Region I participates in GEAR 2030 by ensuring that the consumer voice is included in the discussion and by encouraging the participation of new players in the discussion about future mobility.
