Club news: Bosnia and Herzegovina launches star rating of roads for safety

Publication date: 19 November 2014

On 12 November 2014, BIHAMK, along with project partners, launched the results of the SENSoR (South East Neighbourhood Safe Routes) project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, giving a star rating and advice to improve the safety of road infrastructure.

Inspections of the safety characteristics of roads, according to the EuroRAP protocol and in cooperation with the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences in Zagreb, was performed on 364km of roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The star rating results indicate that nearly half of the observed roads (around 49%) were assessed as high and medium-high risk roads, awarded 1 or 2 stars. 30% of roads were awarded 3 stars. 19% were ranked as medium-low risk roads (4 stars), while only 3% of surveyed roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina were awarded 5 stars.

Following these results, countermeasures that should be implemented by the road authorities have been devised to improve of the level of road safety on the surveyed road sections. Implementing these improvements is estimated to reduce fatalities and serious injuries by 2,000 over 20 years.

The top suggested improvements for road safety:

  • Installing or improving of roadside barriers – driver side and passenger side

  • Shoulder rumble strips

  • Delineation and signing (intersections) -Shoulder sealing

  • Removing clear roadside hazards – driver side and passenger side

Introducing the suggested countermeasures would improve the safety on the inspected part of Bosnia and Herzegovina road network significantly with an overall result of over 78% of the roads inspected achieving a rating of 3 stars or more.
