Club news: ANWB introduces universal spare tire

Publication date: 13 December 2016

The Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB) has introduced a new universal spare tire that fits on most types of cars. The idea, borrowed from the AA UK, is a great solution as fewer and fewer cars are equipped with a spare tire as standard and the number of breakdowns due to flat tires is increasing.

The yellow wheel temporarily replaces the flat tire, including the rim, and enables stranded motorists to quickly get back on the road again. After use, they have 5 days to return the tire. Some members may choose to change the tire at an ANWB Service Centre. Alternatively, they can go to their own garage and return the universal tire to the ANWB by sending it to the Club in a special bag, or ask their own garage to do it for them. Returning the tire is free of charge.

In 2015, the ANWB assisted in 136,000 cases with flat tires. If no spare was available in the car it used to take at least 1.5 hours before members were back on the road. With the new universal tire this is reduced to 15 minutes.
