Club news: AMAK’s traffic education of children in Azerbaijan

Publication date: 03 January 2017

Since October 2016, the National Automobile Club of Azerbaijan (AMAK) and partners have been implementing a pilot project on road safety education at five public schools and five private kindergartens in Baku, Azerbaijan, reaching a total of 800 children. AMAK used its partner EASST’s Comprehensive Road Safety Education Pack. The education pack was tailored for use in Azerbaijan and is a flexible resource and it can be used in a variety of settings. The simple, fun, educational activities teach children and young people how to be safer on the road. The courses were implemented on a weekly basis to children of 4 to 14 years old in both Azerbaijani and Russian sections at schools.

Volunteer university students and school teachers were trained by AMAK and the university students became road safety ambassadors who delivered the trainings to the schoolchildren. This an innovative approach aims to make road safety initiatives in the country sustainable, give the youth hands on experience and contribute to the cause.

Since November, AMAK has involved the Baku State Road Police and representatives have been delivering interactive road safety sessions in each class of the schools. During these sessions, the police hold discussions with children asking questions on road safety to evaluate their knowledge and awareness, as well as share valuable recommendations that children can apply daily. The children impressed both police and their own teachers with their interest in learning on how to educate/advise their own driving parents on wearing seat-belts, speeding, talking on the phone while driving etc.

The next phase will focus on involving the parents of these children, with the aim of broadening the impact of the knowledge conveyed to the children, engaging parents responsible for reinforcement of the knowledge in order to increase the effectiveness and the impact of the education.
