Club news: AAT brings road safety education to schools

The Automobile Association of Tanzania (AAT) launched the ‘Teachers on Road Safety’ training programme to help incorporate road safety into the school curriculum and educate school children on the subject. The programme reached 40 schools and colleges, including 6 nurseries, 27 primary schools and 6 secondary schools. In total, the programme trained more than 800 teachers. By training teachers, AAT aims to reach 50,000 school children.

The Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB) has chosen not to continue its Personal Assistance app which was launched in April 2016 for members that are 65 years and older. The purpose of the app was to make it more convenient for senior members to contact ANWB Emergency Centre by simply pressing a button.

Recall statistics from the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club (ADAC) have revealed that the main causes for vehicle recalls in Germany are faulty airbags and seatbelt tensioners. They accounted for about 56% of the 1.3 million recalled vehicles in 2016, followed by defective windows, doors and bodywork, which made up 14%. This creates a high risk for consumers and ADAC is concerned about the ignorance of the manufactures.

The objective of the meeting was to better understand the potential for bilateral cooperation.

The vast majority of diesel vehicles tested in ADAC's most recent EcoTest failed to meet emissions targets. Out of 38 diesel cars tested by ADAC, only the Mercedes E220 d 9G-Tronic and the BMW 118d Urban Line Steptronic achieved good emission results under real-life conditions. Both cars made it to the group of recommended cars achieving four eco stars out of five.

UAMK and the Czech govenment have agreed to launch a campaign to to prevent car users from removing Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF). It can happen that these filters are removed. UAMK will work to show that this type of disuse of DPFs is not going to prevent breakdowns or improve vehicle performance.

Reial Automòbil Club de Catalunya’s (RACC) driving schools are now using virtual reality systems to improve the driving skills of students, by enabling them to experience tense driving situations during classroom training. This initiative is a response to RACC’s study on young drivers which revealed that ‘not knowing how to react to emergencies’ and ‘not keeping a safe distance between themselves and other vehicles’, are the two main mistakes young drivers make.

Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) together with Goodyear organises an annual National Short Film Award on Road Safety Education, with the aim of promoting road safety among the children in Spain. This year, the short film "Keep your eyes open" came second place in the competition. This film was later awarded a special prize by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) as the Best Road Safety Film in Spanish.

The re-launch of the magazine is one of the initiatives of the Club’s strategic plan to enhance engagement and promote sentimental value among the members.

On 29 March, 28 EU ministers of transport issued a strongly worded Declaration on Road Safety intended to re-invigorate the activities in Europe in this area. In recent years, there has been stagnation in the annual reduction of road deaths; the EU is falling off track from its goal to cut road deaths in half by 2020.

RACE recently helped launched the largest drive-in cinema, AUTOCINE, in Europe with 350 cars in front of a gigantic screen of 250 square meters and food trucks as well as fun activities in an area of 25,000 square meters. Although the Club had never gotten involved in sponsorship activities in the past, it participated in this crazy and darling initiative because RACE found it important to contribute to the cultural sector in Spain, particularly because cinemas are losing prominence in Spain.

On 10 March, the President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Jean Todt, and Chairman of the Executive Board of JCDecaux, Jean-Charles Decaux, launched the first worldwide outdoor campaign on road safety in Paris. Supported by famous ambassadors, the campaign promotes simple and universal messages to save lives on roads. Road crashes are responsible for 3,500 deaths a day worldwide.

RACC is taking a significant step to encourage environmentally friendly mobility by adding the new Renault Kangoo-ZE to its fleet of breakdown-assistance vehicles. These new workshop vehicles are 100% electric and contribute to reduced emissions of pollutants and improved air quality, as well as guaranteeing a 91% on-the-spot repair rate.

FIA Region I member, Touring Club Belgium announced its MaaS pilot operations that will launch on 21 March in Ghent, Belgium.

The AA has launched a new ad that highlights the dangers of texting while driving by playing on the general awareness that drink-driving is unacceptable. The aim is to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, which could be even more dangerous than drink-driving.

More than 78,000 lives have been saved since Euro NCAP’s crash tests were launched 20 years ago this week. Euro NCAP has published over 630 safety ratings, crash-tested some 1,800 cars and collectively spent over €160 million to make cars safer. The Magyar Autoklub of Hungary has elected Jozsef Hatala to be the new president of the Club. The previous President, Oszkar Hegedus, announced his intention to step back with effect from 1 January 2017 after having celebrated 80th birthday end of October. The General Assembly elected former Vice-president, Jozsef Hatala for the remaining term of three years.

It is home to some 800 employees and, for the first time in its 120-year history, the ÖAMTC has now grouped all its emergency services together under one roof.

In 2016, Euro NCAP tested 18 new passenger cars and four heavy quadricycles and today announces some of the year’s highlights. This year also saw the introduction of some significant changes to Euro NCAP’s ratings scheme. The inclusion of tests for pedestrian-detecting autobrake systems drove a huge increase in fitment of this life-saving technology, mostly as standard equipment but also as an option.

After a survey of members at the end of 2014, the ADAC has announced that 39% of members would support the new German road toll only if the funds are reinvested in road infrastructure and if they are not made to pay it. 34% of the membership was against the toll.
