FIA Region I Spring Meeting: Commissioner for Regional Policy discusses funding for transport with Club members

On Thursday 16 May, the EU Commissioner with responsibility for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, met with FIA Region I Club Presidents (including newly elected FIA Region I President Thierry Willemarck and FIA President Jean Todt) to discuss European regional policy, and its impact on transport. The meeting took place during the FIA Region I Spring Meeting which was held in Vienna from 13 May – 17 May 2013.

Thierry Willemarck has been elected the new FIA Region I President today (15 May 2013). Mr Willemarck is a Belgian national who is also CEO of Touring Club Belgium (TCB). He replaces the out-going President Werner Kraus after serving 8 years in the role.

At a European Parliament hearing yesterday, organised by the FIA and BEUC, and hosted by Karl-Heinz Florenz MEP, key stakeholders were brought together to discuss the Commission’s new proposals to limit CO2 emissions to an average of 95 grams per kilometre (g/km) for cars by 2020, in particular regarding the setting of long-term emissions targets, the proposed revision of the emissions test cycles and super-credits for low carbon vehicles.

This year’s European Road Safety Day will be held on 6 May, which is the first day of the UN Global Road Safety Week. To mark the occasion, the FIA and CLEPA invite the Brussels road safety community and the general public to join a walk for pedestrian safety (beginning at Schuman Roundabout and finishing at Parc Cinquantenaire), followed by a demonstration of life-saving vehicle safety technologies at Autoworld.

While some car manufacturers are presenting new models at the Geneva Motor Show, Euro NCAP is announcing today the results for four new cars. The Renault ZOE, Skoda Octavia , Toyota Auris and Toyota RAV4 underwent Euro NCAP’s crash tests and have all achieved the overall five stars.

A new EU tyre labelling regulation comes into force as of 01 November 2012. The new rules aim to provide end-users of vehicles with relevant information about the quality of the estimated 115 million tyres sold in the EU every year, and to guide them towards choosing a product which is more fuel efficient, has better braking in wet conditions and is less noisy.

Never before in its 12-year history has the EuroTest inspection of Motorway Service Areas come up with so many positive ratings throughout Europe. Inspectors awarded 33 “Good” ratings along with 27 "Acceptable" ratings. However, weak areas identified include high prices, low pedestrian safety in outdoor facilities and, in particular, lack of quality services for families and the disabled.

This week, 65 000 members of the Swedish Motorcyclist Association, SMC, get a Medical Card kit. It includes four stickers to add on the helmet/s and a card for medical information to put between the shell and padding of the helmet. With this effort, SMC hope to save a few lives per year through fast and adequate rescue in case of an accident.
