Publication date: 14 November 2005

According to the Financial Times, Commission President Barroso will appoint German liberal Matthias Ruete to the head of the Transport and Energy Department (DG TREN), replacing retiring Frenchman François Lamoureux. Ruete is considered as a close confidant to Industry Commissioner Günter Verheugen.

The Commission announced a major reshuffle of its Directors General and Deputy Director General teams on 9 November 2005. It forms the second mobility package at this level since implementation of the administrative reform. It applies to those officials who have reached five years seniority in 2005 or whose nationality coincides with that of the portfolio Commissioner. The key principle is that senior management staff moves after five years in the same function, although exceptionally they may remain in place up to seven years. 17 Directors-General and Deputy Directors-General consequently being transferred to new posts at various dates up to 1st of January 2006.
