EuroTAP 2006: One out of four Tunnels failed the Test

Publication date: 27 April 2006

In this year's EuroTAP tunnel test, 22 of the 52 tubes tested in 14 European countries were rated “Very good” and nine were rated “Good”. The eight tunnels that were found to be “Acceptable” still hovered at the positive end of the scale. But where there is light there is bound to be a lot of darkness, too: One in four test candidates failed – five tubes were found to be “Poor”, and eight were found to be even “Very poor”.

The winner in this year's test was the Spanish M-12 tunnel on the M 12, the approach road to Madrid's Barajas airport which was officially opened last year. The poorest result ever in the tunnel test's eight year history went to the Italian Segesta tunnel on the A 29 (Palermo – Trapani) near Calatafimi – nothing more than a black hole.

The test was once again carried out this year within the scope of the European EuroTAP project. EuroTAP is backed by the European Commission and eleven European partner clubs. A total of 150 tunnels throughout Europe are to be tested in this project by 2007.
