Danes revving up in focus on green transport
The Danish government has set up a centre for green transport intended to promote energy efficiency and measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the sector. Initial work will involve energy requirements for taxis, energy labelling of vans and optimisation of aerodynamics for lorries.
The centre will also develop "test projects with energy efficient transport solutions on a large scale in collaboration with businesses and municipalities", the transport ministry said in a statement. A DKr 284 million (€38.1m) budget will be allocated over four years as part of a green transport policy agreed in parliament late last month.
Meanwhile, an EU-funded study comparing the impact of emissions from road, air, rail and shipping has showed the road sector has the greatest long-term impact on global warming. Policies to reduce emissions in the short term should focus on aviation, the authors say. The findings were published by the European commission's environment department earlier this month.
